BISHKEK. Ambassadors of the OSCE member-states to Kyrgyzstan today had a meeting with journalists in Bishkek. The ambassadors discussed the current political situation in Kyrgyzstan. The gathering was organized by the OSCE Bishkek office. The head of the office, Aydin Idil, expressed the importance of the rule of law and the deepening of democratic processes in fighting international terrorism. Among the participants of the meeting were the Press Secretary of the Kyrgyz president, Abdil Segizbaev, and US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, John O’Keefe.
The OSCE was one of the international organizations which criticized shortcomings of the referendum preparations in Kyrgyzstan. The referendum on constitutional reforms held on February 2, 2003, was praised by the government and several CIS countries. However, the Kyrgyz opposition says it was illegal, because, as they put it, less than 50 percent of eligible voters participated.
